Every year, on September 11th, hundreds of New York City’s firefighters gather at the Fireman’s Memorial on the Upper West Side to honor those who died in the line of duty on that tragic, unforgettable day. The names of 343 firefighters are read aloud, and in the FDNY tradition, a bell is rung after each. Many also make the trip downtown, to the 9/11 Memorial, where the names of the fallen are inscribed into the bronze panels that encircle the reflecting pools which sit within the footprints where the towers once stood. Another ceremony that honors all who were lost that day takes place at this site. At 8:39 a.m., the names of the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 attacks are read. The ceremony pauses six times – twice to mark the time each plane hit the towers, twice for the moments when the buildings fell, and twice more to mark the attacks on the Pentagon and Flight 93.
